The instantaneous fuel level is not represented on the fuel gauge. A PCM calibration filters out the effects of fuel slosh and other erratic movements of the float. Most vehicle programs utilize two filters: A “Fast Filter” is used when the transmission is in Park or Neutral so that the effects of a customer fill immediately show on the gauge. A “Slow Filter” is used when the vehicle is moving, so that the effects of fuel slosh or temporary level distortions do not confound the gauge reading.
